WHY SENSORY PLAY IS IMPORTANT?

 

Sensory play is important for young children, giving them endless ways to develop and learn. All types of play are essential for children’s development and early learning. Play helps children to develop and improve their gross and fine motor skills, co-ordination and concentration. Also how to work cooperatively and collaboratively, use all their senses to discover and explore their environment, and develop their imagination, creative thinking and ability to problem solve and experiment with solutions.

Sensory Play & Fine Motor Skills

Messy Play

Messy play gives children the opportunity to experience a wide range of sensory experiences.  Fingerpaint, jelly and gloop give children a wonderful opportunity to experiment with different textures and materials.

 

Messy play helps children:

  • Relax 

  • Be creative

  • Learn to experiement with different solutions

  • Learn about colour mixing, patterns, design, texture and rhythm

  • Develop hand-eye coordination and practise the skills of pouring, measuring, mixing, scooping, and beating.



 

Creative Play

​Creative play develops in a child an understanding of the nature of the materials they are using. By using clay, paint, crayons and other materials children make choices and express their own feelings, use their own imagination and explore their own abilities. It is an opportunity to interact with adults and learn new words to build on their vocabulary along with learning about shape, size and color.

 

Creative play is paramount to practicing fine motor skills and gaining control over thier own bodies. 

 

 

 



 

Collaborative Play

Collaborative play opens a childs world to sharing, taking turns, obeying guidelines and negotiating. This stage in a childs life is very important considering each child believes that they are the centre of the universe.

 

​Learning to play in a group teaches them patience, empathy, importance to following the rules and who goes first. This fundamental training lays a foundation for their growth.
